Men and Rohypnol Abuse

Men and Rohypnol Abuse

Rohypnol is a fast-acting benzodiazepine with characteristics similar to those of Valium. Rohypnol is used as a short-term treatment for insomnia and as a premedication for surgery in many countries. Rohypnol is illegal for use in the United States, but it is often purchased on the black market and used as a party drug. Rohypnol produces extreme feelings of euphoria in the user and amnesia-like effects. Rohypnol is a popular party drug among teens and young adult men. Using Rohypnol as a party drug is dangerous and can produce weakness, confusion, difficulty breathing, and unconsciousness.

Rohypnol Addiction

Using Rohypnol as a party drug can lead to addiction. The first sign of addiction is usually tolerance to the drug. Tolerance happens when the person using Rohypnol needs more of the substance to achieve the same results. Because Rohypnol is unpredictable when combined with other party drugs, such as Ecstasy or GHB, the results can be devastating. Rohypnol addiction produces physical dependence, and those who use the drug also become psychologically addicted to the extreme feelings of euphoria the drug produces. Some of the other symptoms of addiction to Rohypnol include the following:

  • Needing a supply of the drug at all times
  • Not being able to enjoy a party or other social gathering without using Rohypnol
  • Going into debt to get and use the drug
  • Risking legal troubles to get and use Rohypnol
  • Becoming more involved in the drug culture in order to use the drug

If you or a loved one exhibits any of these symptoms of Rohypnol addiction, it is time to get help.

Rohypnol Abuse in Men

Although Rohypnol is a popular party drug among young men, overall use of the drug is declining. Rohypnol rose in popularity and peaked between 1994 and 2004. According to Monitoring the Future 2009, a continuing study of American youth, Rohypnol use in the previous year among high school students was down 1.6 percent from its peak. Rohypnol use is also down among young people because it is currently one of the most difficult street drugs to obtain.
