Has Rohypnol Been Changed to Reduce Abuse?

Has Rohypnol Been Changed to Reduce Abuse?

Rohypnol is an intermediate benzodiazepine notoriously known as the date rape drug. Due to its high potency and ability to induce amnesia, it is sometimes used by perpetrators of sexual assault to debilitate their victims. Robbers have used this drug to sedate victims before stealing from them. Rohypnol is capable of producing the following symptoms:

  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Impaired motor skills
  • Disorientation
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Amnesia

Hoffman-La Roche, the manufacturer of Rohypnol, has changed the drug’s formulation to curb acts of violence, especially sexual crimes. However, the drug is still a highly potent substance, so Hoffman-La Roche has made the drug easier to detect when it has been slipped into a drink. Unfortunately, these changes do not affect Rohypnol’s strength or effects.

What Manufacturer Changes Have Been Made to Rohypnol?

Rohypnol was once sold as a white tablet that dissolved in drinks without leaving behind any color, odor or taste. However, it is now sold as a green tablet with a blue core, which means it is easier to detect when slipped into a drink. The core of the pill turns clear drinks blue, but the blue color may be difficult to detect in dark-colored drinks. In response, the manufacturer changed the formulation again to make Rohypnol dissolve more slowly, so now the gives even dark colored drinks a murky or cloudy appearance. Unfortunately, generic versions of Rohypnol may not have these features.

Rohypnol Use at House Parties and Dance Clubs

Rohypnol is illegal in the US, but it is still prescribed for certain conditions in some parts of the world. Like all benzodiazepines, this drug is addictive and can cause physical and psychological dependence. It is stronger than most benzodiazepines, with 10 times the potency of Valium. Despite its illegal status, Rohypnol has gained popularity as a party drug in the US. At house parties and dance clubs, the drug is often combined with alcohol, which increases the likelihood that users will suffer physical distress as a result of use. When combined with alcohol, Rohypnol use may cause the following symptoms:

  • Respiratory depression
  • Severely low blood pressure
  • Coma
  • Fatality

The effects of Rohypnol may last as long as 24 hours. People who abuse Rohypnol should seek help immediately.
